Introduction to Factur-X: Structured Electronic Invoicing

Factur-X is the new e-invoicing standard revolutionizing how French companies exchange commercial documents. But what makes it so important? Why are French and European governments mandating it? And how can Scell.io help you implement it in just a few lines of code?

What is Factur-X?

Factur-X is a hybrid and structured format combining two technologies:

  • PDF/A-3: an archivable, human-readable PDF that looks great
  • XML: a structured, machine-readable format embedded inside the PDF

Unlike simple PDFs or traditional EDI invoicing, Factur-X offers the best of both worlds: an invoice your client can open in any PDF reader, AND that their accounting system can automatically parse.

Why this name?

Factur-X is a portmanteau of "Facture" (French for invoice) and "X" (for XML). It's a standard jointly developed by France and Germany, ratified by ISO as ISO 20022.

Factur-X profiles

Factur-X doesn't offer a one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on your complexity level, you choose a profile:

MINIMUM

The bare minimum: 47 mandatory data points. For SMEs without complex needs.

BASIC

Common profile: ~80 data points. Covers most French B2B use cases.

EN16931

The most important: compliant with the European eInvoicing directive (Directive 2014/55/EU). Supports credit notes, deposits, multi-currency scenarios. This is the level you should target for maximum coverage.

EXTENDED

Advanced profile for large groups with complex needs (cost codes, price hierarchies, framework contracts).

Scell.io natively supports the first three. Most of our clients use EN16931.

French regulatory timeline 2026-2027

French law progressively mandates e-invoicing for B2B:

DateRequirementScope
Jan 1, 2025E-invoicing with e-signature POSSIBLE (SES)All
Sept 1, 2026Electronic invoicing MANDATORYLarge enterprises (>250 employees)
Jan 1, 2027Electronic invoicing MANDATORYSMEs/Mid-size (>10 employees)
Jan 1, 2028Electronic invoicing MANDATORYMicro-enterprises

Heads up: if you invoice a large French company, you must already be able to receive electronic invoices since 2025. Being able to emit is not enough — you must also receive.

Factur-X advantages for your business

For vendors (consulting, SaaS, agencies)

  • ✅ 100% automated invoicing (generation + transmission)
  • ✅ Time savings on admin (-30% client accounting overhead)
  • ✅ Guaranteed legal compliance
  • ✅ Real-time webhooks when client receives it
  • ✅ ISCA audit trail (legal immutability)

For buyers (SMEs, mid-size firms)

  • ✅ Automatic ERP import (no more manual entry)
  • ✅ VAT amount recognition without error risk
  • ✅ Automatic matching with purchase orders
  • ✅ Audit compliance without effort
  • ✅ Enhanced tax traceability

What Factur-X is NOT

❌ It's not classical EDI

EDI is purely electronic but very technical format. Factur-X is more readable and structured.

❌ It's not a digital signature

Factur-X is a FORMAT. E-signature (eIDAS) is ORTHOGONAL — you can have Factur-X + signature, or one without the other. At Scell.io, we offer both together for maximum compliance.

❌ It's not a digitalization platform

Factur-X is a file format. A PDP (Plateforme De Dématérialisation Partenaire) platform like SuperPDP stores, archives, guarantees trust. Factur-X is just the container.

Implementation with Scell.io

Implementing Factur-X without Scell.io requires:

  • Learning complex XML schemas
  • Coding a PDF/A-3 generator (horstoeko/zugferd)
  • Managing Schematron validations
  • Maintaining legal compliance

With Scell.io, it's just one API call:

const invoice = await scell.invoices.create({
buyer: { name: "Acme Corp", siret: "12345678901234" },
  lines: [{ description: "Consulting", quantity: 10, unitPrice: 100 }],
  outputFormat: "factur-x", // Factur-X auto-generated
});

We handle the rest: validation, legal archiving, PDP transmission, webhooks. You code once, we scale.

Conclusion

Factur-X is far more than a technical standard — it's the gateway to France's digital future. Between 2026 and 2028, it will become as inevitable as HTML color codes were in 1995.
